ANIMAL PRIDE ROADSHOW - LOCAL HEROES RECEIVE ANIMAL PRIDE AWARDS

Posted 31 July 1998

A teenager who risked his own life when rescuing a dog from an oncoming train and a cat who alerted a couple to a fire in their home are among people and animals who will be receiving the Animal Pride Award for Compassion to Animals this summer as part of Animal Aid's nationwide Animal Pride Roadshow. The roadshow will be visiting 10 major UK shopping centres and aims to encourage members of the public to support a new, fairer deal for animals.

Awards will be presented to local people who have made a special sacrifice, or committed a particularly brave act to help one or more animals in need. In fact, some of the awards will be going to animals who have met the heroism test (see attached for full details of the 10 regional winners).

Said Animal Aid's Director, Andrew Tyler,

'The Animal Pride Awards for Compassion to Animals highlight the amazing capabilities of both people and animals to show compassion for one another under extraordinary circumstances.'

The Animal Pride Roadshow will offer a host of different activities - including an interactive computer quiz; a celebrity video featuring Jilly Cooper, Uri Geller, Spike Milligan and Tony Banks; free animal face painting for kids, and the chance to meet Animal Aid's very own 'foxes', Frankie and Felicia.

Shoppers will also be asked to sign up to the Animal Pride declaration which states, 'I believe that all animals have the right to a life free from cruelty and abuse'. Animal Aid's recent NOP national survey found that 86% of the public support the declaration.

Said Animal Aid's director Andrew Tyler,

"In every social group and across the age range, people are looking for ways to lead lives without causing needless animal suffering. The simple message of the Animal Pride Roadshow is: "Why be cruel when you can be kind?" "
