Asda joins seven other supermarkets in saying 'Yes' to CCTV in slaughterhouses
Posted 28 March 2011
This is another important step in Animal Aid’s CCTV-in-slaughterhouses campaign. The objective is to persuade supermarkets to insist that all their meat suppliers install independently monitored CCTV cameras in both the stunning and the slaughter areas (and shackling areas in the case of birds), in order to prevent some of the appalling brutality revealed by our undercover investigations. The law was being broken in seven out of the eight slaughterhouses in which we have filmed.
Now Asda has joined Aldi, the Co-op, Marks & Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Waitrose in saying ‘Yes’ to the cameras and to the independent monitoring of the resulting footage. We are keeping up the pressure on Iceland, Lidl and wholesalers Booker with a second letter-writing campaign launched in March through a mailing to our supporters, and via more national newspaper adverts on April the 16th.
Of course, farmed animals will still suffer, and Animal Aid will continue to promote a cruelty-free vegan diet as the only way to stop that completely, but if we can now prevent some of the appalling brutality that our cameras revealed, then we have a duty to do so.
